A Creative Exploration of Mediterranean BluesOverview In December 2023, we traveled to Marseille, France, to work on a packaging design project for a Pastis Drink brand. This is the story of our journey to this incredible city and the enriching experience it brought.
Brief and the Challenge Cristal Limiñana, the pastis brand, introduced a new drink, and we were tasked with designing its bottle label packaging.With just one week to deliver, it was a challenging but rewarding experience.
About Brand Founded in 1884 in Algeria, Cristal Limiñana moved to Marseille in 1961 and flourished. It now crafts anisette, liqueurs, pastis, and imports like Limoncello and Colombian rum.
Exploring and Gathering Insights We met Maristella Vasserot, owner of Cristal Limiñana, toured the factory, and explored Marseille, where the graffiti, architecture, food, port, and vibrant Mediterranean lifestyle stood out. Locals gathered at the port for sunsets, and we joined them on Île de Riou for a stunning view.
Brainstorming Ideas We brainstormed different ideas which included packaging inspired by Marseille’s graffiti, architecture, the port and ships and locals' connection to Pastis and the Mediterranean lifestyle, while highlighting anise, the essence of Pastis.
Design Concept The concept is inspired by the deep blues of the Mediterranean Sea, closely connected to Pastis' key ingredient, Anise. We’ve drawn on the scent of Anise and the maritime charm of ships that once brought Anise and other spices to France through the port of Marseille, creating a design that reflects both elegance and richness.
